The following health services are available to students:

  • Preventive health care, including health education
  • Age-appropriate reproductive health care
  • Mental health, behavioral health, and social emotional health services
  • Oral health care
  • Health insurance eligibility and enrollment assistance
  • Referrals to other health care providers and specialists as needed

A school-based health center provides a natural setting to provide the services and resources students and their families need to maintain and improve their health. What is a school-based health center and who will it serve?

A school-based health center is just like a walk-in clinic. It serves Edmonds School District students and their families. They have access to and will be able to receive medical and mental health care before, during, and after school.

Who is eligible for services?

At this time, the clinic is open to registered students and their families.

Why provide a school-based health center?

We have a large number of students who are unable to access basic healthcare because of socioeconomic barriers. The SBHC is not to interfere with a student’s existing healthcare, rather it is a way for every student to have access to basic healthcare in our community. The SBHC will provide the following:

  • Support adolescents’ ability to promote their own health.
  • Improve health outcomes, school attendance, and grades.
  • Increase access to care for adolescents.

What services will be provided at the center?

We envision the center offering services similar to a walk-in clinic. Routine sports physicals

  • Vaccinations
  • Treatment of common injuries and illnesses
  • Support the management of ongoing health conditions
  • Minor gynecological problems
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Reproductive health services (abortion will NOT be offered at the SBHC)
  • STI/STD Screening and Treatment
  • Mental Health services
  • Crisis intervention
  • Dental services
  • Health education
  • Assistance for families seeking a medical/dental home
  • Health insurance enrollment assistance

Does my child need parental permission to access services at an SBHC?

Yes, in most cases. Students must be enrolled by their guardians to receive the full range of services provided by an SBHC. Every effort will be made to involve students’ families in their care. Students may access confidential reproductive or mental health services, according to Washington state’s minor consent laws, as they could with any other healthcare provider in the community.

Will an SBHC work with my student’s primary care physician?

Yes. When parents or guardians complete enrollment for their students they will need to fill out the primary provider’s information.
